Why Manufacturers are Going to Upside Down EV Battery Safety Vents?

As the adoption of new energy vehicles continues to surge, so too have safety incidents involving them. Upon examining relevant vehicle accidents, it was discovered that the primary culprits include aging battery components, external collisions, extreme temperatures, battery thermal runaways, and high loads. Notably, incidents involving fire and electricity account for over half of all incidents.

On the other hand, from the terminal point of view, safety, battery life, charging, cost, and residual value are still the main concerns that affect consumers’ purchase of electric vehicles, and the core target is still to start with power batteries.

Will Bottom EV Battery Safety Vents Design being a New Trend?

Honeycomb Energy has officially launched the “Dragon Scale Battery” during its third Battery Day, which boasts a revolutionary feature. Unlike traditional designs, the battery safety vent is situated at the base of the dagger battery core, making it an innovative structural design referred to as “Dragon Scale Armor.”

Currently, battery companies typically design the safety vent of the battery core to be located at the top. To ensure a safer battery pack design, a pressure relief channel should be reserved above the ev battery safety vents during the thermal runaway process of a single cell. This channel helps guide any thermal runaway leakage to the side or bottom for removal. However, it’s important to note that during this process, high-temperature emissions may spread to adjacent cells or electrical units, which can increase the safety risks of the battery pack.

Similarly, the design of Honeycomb Energy also innovatively designs the explosion-proof valve of the dagger battery core used in the Dragon Scale Armor battery at the bottom. The purpose is to quickly realize directional pressure relief once a certain battery core thermal runaway occurs, and the eruption can pass through in a designated direction. The optimal channel discharges quickly and will not spread to surrounding cells.

Battery Packs need to be Safer, Thermoelectric Separation is the Direction of Iteration

The battery safety ventings is strategically positioned at the base of the battery core, creating an independent thermal runaway pressure relief area and power transmission area, which ensures the battery’s safety. With extensive research and safety design, various battery and vehicle companies have developed mature protocols for handling battery thermal runaway. However, in the unlikely event of the battery core losing control, the resulting gas-liquid-solid mixture can lead to secondary hazards, particularly those related to electricity, such as insulation failures, short circuits, and metal plate breakdown or melting.

Nevertheless, the lithium battery safety vent’s primary function is to quickly release gas through the valve, securing the battery’s safety whenever the internal gas pressure is too high, or the temperature is abnormal, regardless of its position above or below the battery. Its location within the battery does not affect its working principle or efficacy.

Ultimately, the placement of the safety vent in relation to the battery should be determined based on the specific circumstances and safety regulations in play. Various factors, including battery properties, operational conditions, and safety standards, must be taken into account to guarantee the valve’s proper functioning and protective capabilities.

As the demand for new energy models rises and the production cost of safety vents for lithium-ion batteries gradually increases, battery manufacturers may face challenges in finding a suitable manufacturer for explosion-proof discs. Even after passing the required tests, verifying their feasibility can be a time-consuming process. This, in turn, presents a challenge for vehicle companies in matching and purchasing these components.
